Here’s the Box Breakdown

april spice breeze

Everything that we received in our April Spice Breeze package. As always this spread is gorgeous!

So what is all this stuff?

Our insert talks about the spices for this month and that it’s the Thai New Year and we’ve received a traditional Thai recipe with this kit.

Our first recipe is from Thailand and is “Drunken Noodles”. Our spice blend is a mixture of; chili, coriander, garlic, lemongrass, lemon peel, ginger, star anise, cilantro, onion, basil, cumin, white pepper, cinnamon and lemon oil.

The recipe doesn’t seem too hard and we’ve had drunken noodles before so we’d be really interested in trying this at home!

Our next recipe is for falafel. We have to say that we adore falafel and almost decided to make this, this month but went with something more kid friendly. We’ll definitely be making this for just the parents one night. Our spice blend contains just cumin and coriander.

This recipe does require a food processor (we have one) but also seems pretty easy.

Shukto our second to last recipe is Bengali in origin and is a staple dinner item in the Bengali diet. This is a little bitter, blended with sugar. Our spice packet contains; Panch Phoron, cumin, fennel, fenugreek, brown and yellow mustard and nigella. The second pack contains a mixture of yellow and brown mustard, ajowan and bay leaves.

This dish is very vegetable heavy which we like but preparing this dish with the kids might be tough. We’ll be putting this one on hold until we can make it just for ourselves.

Our final recipe is for Spaghetti Napolitana or Pasta al Pomodora (noodles with tomatoes) which is a basic Italian dish. The spice blend gives us enough for 2 dishes and you can use many different variations of meat and vegetables. The packet includes; tangerine peel, sundried tomatoes, garlic, basil and white pepper.

Not only did this recipe look super simple and give us a lot of wiggle room with ingredients, it’s also completely kid friendly ( our kids LOVE pasta). So this was the recipe we chose to create this month.

Our first step is to heat up 2 tablespoons of oil in a pot

Add our chopped onion and cook until it turns transluscent

Next we add our tomatoes and stir in half our Napalitano spices. The recipe calls for canned tomatoes – we split it up using one can of tomatoes and one actual tomato.

Our next step is to add whatever variation of meat or vegetables you choose. We went with bell peppers and mushrooms.

We give it a good stir and add salt and pepper to taste

Then we cover it and bring it to a boil. Once it’s boiling we reduce heat to medium and cook for 30 minutes.

We were pretty impressed. Our husband makes his own sauce (and it takes all day) so trying a sauce that takes less than an hour to cook and tastes great is wonderful.

We totally forgot to garnish with basil but went ahead and made some garlic bread to go along with this tasty dish!

So in summary

We look for three things in a subscription box; quality, curation, and presentation. The Spice Breeze Subscription is a wonderful way to fill your kitchen with exotic smells and flavors. The presentation is great, not only does everything arrive perfectly it always looks beautiful. The quality is fantastic. The spices are organic as well as high quality, And curation – is so amazing. Each packet includes 4 different countries and 4 different flavor profiles which guarantee there will never be a dull moment at your dinner table!
