Here’s the Box Breakdown

Here’s everything that we received in our Spice Breeze package for May. This month’s packet features 2 new countries – Georgia and Cuba. Can’t wait to make one of these tasty sounding recipes!

So what is all this stuff?

Our box insert tells us about this month’s recipes and each recipe tells us a bit about what we’re making, what’s in the spice blend and of course our recipe!

Shichimi Shrimps

Shichimi Togarashi is as popular in Japan as salt and pepper is here. We can adjust our level of heat in this recipe which is a nice way to make this edible for the whole family.

We received three spice packets for this recipe. The first included; orange peel, white and black sesame seeds, chili pepper, poppy seeds, paprika, and ginger. The second packet included sichuan pepper and our final third packet included cayenne pepper. This looks so tasty and is relatively simple to make!

Fajitas

Fajitas were made by Mexican cowboys in Texas making them more Tex-mex than anything. Don’t get us wrong though, we love us a good fajita!

There were 2 spice packets included in this recipe, the first included smoked paprika, cumin, white pepper and oregano. The second packet in this kit included jalapeno pepper.

Badrijani

This Georgian recipe is a mixture of eggplant and walnut and infuses Khmeli-Suneli spice blend which is unique to each family that creates it.

We had just one spice packet for this recipe. It included; coriander, fenugreek, marigold, hyssop, paprika, mint, black pepper, turmeric, savory, methi, basil, cinnamon and cloves.

Vaca Frita

Our final recipe for the month (and the one we decided to concoct) is Cuban Vaca Frita. This popular dish is literally translated as “fried beef”.

We receive two spice packets. The first included cumin, orange peel and oregano. The second packet included chipotle pepper and ancho pepper.

Our first step in this recipe is to add our skirt steak and quartered green pepper to a pot.

We also add onion, garlic and salt.

Cover your mixture with water and cook on high heat.

Once your pot is boiling reduce heat to low and cook on low for 2-4 hours or until meat is tender.

Shred your meat and at this point you’ll also want to start your rice.

Now you’ll fry your other green pepper and onion in oil until translucent.

Remove your vegetables from pan reserving oil.

In the same pan fry meat, garlic, Cuban spice pack 1 and Cuban spice pack 2 to taste.

Fry for 5-10 minutes or until golden brown. Add your vegetables back to pan to reheat.

Add lime juice and serve with rice!

Our finished meal, it was delicious and the whole family enjoyed it!

So in summary

We look for three things in a subscription box; quality, curation and presentation. The Spice Breeze subscription is a great way to up your cooking game each month and we love that they offer the option to customize your packet. It makes this perfect for pickier eaters. The presentation is great, everything arrives perfectly. The quality is amazing. We love their commitment to includ fresh and organic spices. And curation is fantastic. We love the different flavors that we receive and how well each of our recipes always comes together!
