Subscription Box Review

subscription box review

Our first glimpse inside the Heady Mix package. This is their inaugural box!

book subscription boxes

Everything that arrived in the first package from Heady Mix. The focus of this box is on the D/deaf community and has a theme called, “Loud Silence”. I thought this was a great way to start out this subscription and will offer readers a new perspective!

So what is all this stuff?

Our box insert tells us more about the theme for this box as well as a little blurb about each of the items that they’ve included.

I love that they give us this information about the different books and other items.

You’re the Bees Knees Card

There were two cards included in this month’s box from Katrina Sophia. This first one – is just a great dose of positive affirmation to whomever the recipient is!

Merry Christmas Card

Our second card, also by Katrina Sophia has a robin on it and is super cute and … I mean the holidays are coming!

Loud Silence Book of Short Stories

The first book in our collection is a book of short stories from writers in the D/deaf space. It’s been curated by Heady Mix and includes details about each of the writers in the book.

The back has a note that this book begs the reader to question whether the absence of sound is silence … and I think that is just the most apt way to put it!

Ismael and His Sisters by Louise Stern

Our next book by Louise Sterns follows three deaf people in a rural Mayan village who communicate through sign language. The book approaches signing rhythmically and omits words to share with readers the different between spoken language and sign language (super clever).

This is the book I am most excited to read in this collection!

Books with Balance Reading Journal

Next up is a reading journal put together by the folks at Heady Mix. I’ve been wanting a reading journal for quite a while… so I was excited to receive this.

Inside there is plenty of space for your own notes and even a place to add a starred rating!

Being Greta by Maxine Sinclair

Written by a British sign language interpreter, Being Greta follows a young deaf woman named Greta throughout her life and through her typical day to day activities.

This book has some themes that are a little more edgy but promises to be a pretty good read I think!

So in summary

Presentation: Everything was packaged well and arrived to me perfectly in my Heady Mix package

Quality: I really love how these books are from writers who offer a unique perspective and whom I’d otherwise not have heard of!

Curation: This first Loud Silence collection is not only unique, but it’s something that we don’t think about often offers readers a lens into the lives of people who live without hearing!
