misfits market reviews

Misfits Market is an ugly produce subscription box that is delivered either weekly or bi-weekly. You’ll receive a random selection of organic, rescued fruits and vegetables from small farms in the United States. All the package is recyclable and biodegradable to combat packaging waster and each week Misfits updates their site to show people what is available in boxes for that week. There are two different options – the Mischief Box which contains 8-10 pounds of produce for $22 (they just increased the pricing) and the Madness (what I receive) that includes 18-20 pounds of produce for $35. Misfits does have a referral program so for each friend you refer they’ll get 25% off their box and so will you (use my link to get 25% OFF yours)! At this time Misfits Market only delivers to select states; PA, NY, NJ, CT, DE, MA, VT, NH, RI, ME, OH, WV, WDC, VA, MD, NC, SC, IL, IN and KT. Shipping rates are calculated at checkout. NAT pays for this subscription.

Our first glimpse inside the Misfits Market for this week. This week we received a sheet that tells us how Misfits get the produce (and subsequently how it arrives to us) as well as a recipe card for pickled tomatoes which sounds fun!

So what did you receive?

First up in our Misfits Market Madness Box are two heads of organic white cauliflower. I will most likely use this in my lunches and rice the cauliflower! I’ve noticed in the larger box from Misfits Market you’ll get doubles to accommodate larger families.

Alright so here’s where it gets a bit dicey. I didn’t look at the site last week to see what was in the boxes and I received what appears to be two different types of oranges. I couldn’t tell you what types these are and for all I know – they may be the same. I do know that this week they are offering Valencia oranges so maybe one of these or both is a Valencia orange? Either way, they are sure to be delicious!

We also received one Crespo Mango which my kids have already devoured. Since we have veggies with dinner we try to incorporate fruit in their lunches as much as possible.

There was also one lone grapefruit in our box. I will definitely be enjoying this for breakfast and since I only eat half it will last me two days! I like my grapefruit plain … which isn’t the norm I’m finding out! How do you eat your grapefruit let me know in the comments!

Another single is this lone beet! I love beets and they’re super versatile. My husband prefers them roasted in the oven while I love them cooked in a sugar, vinegar glaze that my Grandmother used to make. This one is huge and will be enough to serve our whole family!

Then there were four green bell peppers included in our package as well. It’s important to note that the bags that Misfits Market uses are called “Biobags” as they are biodegradable and compostable! Green peppers are another extremely versatile vegetable. I often use them in my lunches as salad with a bit of feta cheese and white wine vinegar but you can saute them or use them in omelets (we’ve been on an omelet kick in my home).

Onion preference is a serious issue guys. I took to facebook once asking people their favorite types of onion and the responses were varied and PASSIONATE. Purple is my onion of choice for it’s fresh flavor and bite! I use it in salads and omelets and just about anything we are eating. There were three purple onions included in our Misfits Market box this week.

I feel like we hit the jackpot. This is two weeks in a row that I received leeks and EVERYONE in my house is a fan of them. You could use these in a potato leek soup but my husband is extremely creative in the kitchen and uses them in a mash that is out of this world good (and simple). We even started saving the tops parts of the stalks for (you aren’t going to believe this) omelets!

We also received 6 Persian cucumbers. These are the perfect type of cucumber to pickle and that is exactly what I did! These are a great addition to this box as they’re still giving me those summer vibes!

The last vegetable that I received in this weeks box is this bag of green beans. Lately we’ve been making foil packets with our green beans and zucchini and grilling them with some garlic and olive oil so that’s probably what we’ll end up doing with these. For my family I may have to add some to this though.

There were also six Gala apples included in our box for this week. These are a bit smaller than normal apples which is, I guess? Why they were included in this box. They were still just as delicious! I’ll probably include these in my kids lunch boxes!

The final item in our Misfits Box are these six lemons. I love having these around for all sorts of recipes (lately I’ve been making chicken picatta and it brings the house down). My kids (and myself) also love to eat these plain so that’s always an option as well.

So in summary

Presentation: I get that the vegetables are supposed to be ugly but that just isn’t the case with this box. Everything is packaged well and arrives to us in very great condition!

Quality: I love that each of the fruits and vegetables that I receive in my Misfits Market box is organic and from small farms that put a lot of effort into the crops that they grow!

Curation: I love that the variety changes seasonally and as things are fresh and ripe and readily available. It keeps the assortment ever changing and optimum for eating!
