Sew Outside the Box – Love That Totebag! Review + Unboxing

sew outside the box review

Sew Outside the Box is an online resource for sewers. They have a few boxes that are not subscription based and they sent us over one of the “Love that Totebag” boxes. This is a DIY kit that includes everything you’ll need to create a lined totebag. Boxes are $45. NAT received this package at  no cost for review purposes.

Our first glimpse inside the package from Sew Outside the Box.

sew outside the box review

Everything that came in my package from Sew Outside the Box. These fabrics and colors are awesome. I’m not sure if each box has the same fabrics or not though.

So what is all this stuff?

Our box insert. This tells us where we can access the online tutorial and videos that explain our project. These are password protected.

Theses sheets of paper will be used to trace and outline different aspects of the project.

This fabric will serve as the lining of the bag.

This fabric will be the outside of the totebag.

And this fabric will be used for the appliques.

These clips can be used to hold your fabric in place. Love all the different colors.

A safety pin was also included in our box.

We’ll  use this to make the template for our appliques.

And this is the interfacing, we’ll be using this between our outer bag and lining.

We also received two spools of thread in both red and navy.

We also received these sheets that help you practice sewing which I think is a really neat idea!

And they sweetened up the deal with a couple of lollipops from Dr. Johns!

Okay so now what?

Alright, I have to be honest and say that sewing is not a strong suit of mine but Penelope does love to sew (she’s still learning). I thought this would be a great little challenge for her.

I was concerned starting out that I wouldn’t be much help to her if she needed me but the videos and PDF are so helpful and she enjoyed this creating process!

The only part that she needed my help with was ironing out the fabrics.

Penny completed this project over the course of a few weeks (school is back in session and she’s juggling middle school life).

The original project had hearts on it but Penny isn’t a hearts kid of kid so she made a square! This was really interesting to me to see how appliques are created and applied to fabric.

Here she is cutting her applique out.

This is what it looked like once she applied it!

Here is her finished project. I sure am proud of her and she did a great job. This box makes sewing easy and fun and takes the guesswork out of the process!

So in summary

Presentation: Everything arrived to us perfectly in our box from Sew Outside the Box

Quality: All of the items that were included in our box were high quality!

Curation: I love the assortment of fabrics that we received and the instructions were well laid out and clearly defined what was necessary.
