Here’s the Box Breakdown

Everything that we received in our September package from Spice Breeze.

So what is all this stuff?

This month brought us something new. In lieu of a spice kit we received a featured flavor, Nigella Seeds. Included with our seeds are a bunch of ideas on how to use them.

We haven’t used them yet but think we’ll use them as a an extra bit of flavor in our next salad.

Our first spice blend is for Cajun Blackened Fish. Despite it’s name you can also use this blend on poultry. Because this recipe works best on a grill and it’s getting cold here in Southeastern Pennsylvania we opted not to create this recipe for the month.

Our blend includes; paprika, garlic, yellow mustard, onions, black peppercorns, oregano, cumin, cayenne, thyme, bay leaves and celery seeds.

Next is our Buddha bowl. This vegetarian dish is as colorful as it is flavorful. Our blend for this spice kit includes; coarse brown mustard and nigella seeds.

Our final recipe for the month and the one that we decided to create is Shakshuka, an Israeli dish that is famous throughout the world. This dish has a delicate heat and is topped with poached eggs.

Our spice packets for this recipe include; cumin, paprika, Marash pepper flakes, sesame, sumac, coriander, thyme, cumin and black pepper.

Okay so now what ?

First we cook our red pepper and green pepper for about 10 minutes.

While that was cooking we minced our garlic

This recipe is made with a dip for your naan bread but (low carb life) we opted to add a bit of double protein with white meat chicken in lieu of the bread for ourselves. We prepped this with spice packet 2 and popped it in the oven while our peppers sauted.

Now we add the garlic, packet 1 of Shakshuka spices and salt and pepper to taste to the mix and stir fry for 2 minutes.

Next we add tomatoes, tomato paste and salt and pepper and mix well.

You’ll get something that looks like this.

Our next step is to cover and cook on medium low heat for about 10 minutes (once sauce has thickened a bit).

This smells absolutely wonderful!

Now for one of our final steps, creating little wells in our sauce and cracking eggs into them. You can use 3 or 4 (we opted for 3).

We cook the eggs until the whites are cooked through but the yolks are still runny.

We mixed this concoction together and served with fresh parsley, warmed naan, and our chicken breast pieces.

This was our daughters .. she loved it!

And this was our carb free version!

So in summary

Presentation: We love the way the spices in Spice Breeze are put on display and everything arrives perfectly.

Quality: We love that they include organic spices and less common spices that we wouldn’t be likely to find at the supermarket.

Curation: We have a lot of say in our Spice Breeze subscription ( if we so desire) and think they put a lot of thought into the beautiful dishes that they send us each month. Our kids and husband love this subscription and so do we!
