OatBox “Build your own plan” Review:

Inside my first OatBox review, I received a notecard welcoming me to better mornings! I did not get a notecard in my most recent box, so maybe they have changed things up, or because I am a returning customer they didn’t include the notecard?!

My “build you own OatBox plan” included:

  • Pumpkin Spice Granola
  • Coconut & Wild Blueberry Granola
  • Wild Blueberry & Coconut Oatmeal
  • Carrot Cake Oatmeal
  • Cranberry & Pecan Oatmeal
  • Mixed Breakfast Bars (Pack of 18)

With this OatBox, I decided to try a few ‘new to me’ products, including granolas, oatmeals, and an assortment of breakfast bars.

The October monthly specials were: Pumpkin Spice Granola and Carrot Cake Oatmeal. If you love all things pumpkin spice (PSL) then you will love this granola. The flavour was subtle and not too sweet. I love the crunch of the oats, that didn’t get too soggy with milk. And the pumpkin seeds were the perfect added touch! The Carrot Cake Oatmeal on the other hand was a hard pass! All you could taste was chewy dried carrots and no other flavors, it was very bland! As it was the monthly special I am not sure if they will offer it again, but if they do heed my warning!

The Coconut & Wild Blueberry Granola was an enjoyable crunchy breakfast granola. Nothing really stood out as far as the flavour goes, other than the coconut shavings, which I happened to like. I do wish that the blueberries would have softened up a little more and maybe had more flavour.

The Cranberry & Pecan Oatmeal was my favorite breakfast cereal in this box so far. I love the sweetness of the cranberries and the nutty flavour and crunch of the pecans.

With so many new breakfast cereals delivered this month we still have yet to try the Wild Blueberry & Coconut Oatmeal. I’m hoping that by cooking the blueberries they will soften up compared to the harder ones in the granola.

After having now tried many of the flavours of granola and oatmeal from OatBox, we decided to try the breakfast bars for something new. We figured these would be a great grab-and-go option for us in the mornings when we are short on time. However, they are fairly pricey so we aren’t in a hurry to eat them quickly.

In total, we got 18 cereal bars: six strawberry and cranberry bars, six date and pear bars, and six chocolate and banana bars.

So far we have only tried the date and pear bars. It was okay, kind of what I expect from a healthy breakfast bar. The date and pear had a slight grittiness, which is typical of those fruits. I am curious to see how the other ones compare.

Verdict: As a rule of thumb I much prefer granola over oatmeal, but this month OatBox definitely stepped up the game on oatmeals. With a touch of honey or agave syrup, it was just the right amount of sweetness for me. I like things sweet! My family loves Oatmeal so as usual, they enjoyed them all (with the exception of the Carrot Cake… avoid that one!) My whole family is big into our breakfast cereals. We love many of them on! But like many things we get in a rut with the same ones time after time. OatBox is helping us to switch up our meals and eat healthy in a hurry!

Atlas Coffee Club – Guatemala (Medium Roast & Dark Roast) Review:

This month Atlas Coffee Club brought us coffees all the way from the Los Lerdes region of Guatemala. Our box consisted of 2 coffees – one medium roast and one dark roast.

The taster’s notes are very similar in the outline of the coffee and where it is from, however, once it is roasted, that is when the flavours change.

The dark roast coffee has “delicious chocolatey notes, a red apple-like crisp acidity, and a warm, delicious cinnamon-like finish that lingers”. As a suggestion, Atlas Coffee Club recommends trying it as a cold brew coffee.

The medium roast coffee has “a delicious hint of raisin, a wonderful lime-like zing to accompany, and a warm, delicious oatmeal-like note to finish”. As a suggestion, they recommend trying this coffee with a clever coffee dripper.

Each subscription comes with a postcard from the highlighted country that helps you fully immerse yourself in the local culture. Through the simple blurb on the back of the postcard, you get a real feel for what the area looks like, the architecture, the scenery, the wildlife, and the history. You are taken on a trip to another country all the while sipping the local coffee.

Verdict:

I’m enjoying a cup of Atlas Coffee right now as I write my verdict 🙂  I was impressed with the simple and compact packaging of the coffee sent to me; we all strive to be a little more environmentally conscious, and this was nice to see.   The coffee itself was great!  Nothing beats fresh ground coffee beans… just the smell of it brewing is so different than pre-ground mass-produced grocery-store coffee.  The aroma made my mouth water, and I couldn’t wait to try the first cup.   I normally drink Dark Roast, so I started with the medium roast first.  I was very impressed with how smooth the coffee tasted.  No bitterness at all; and for a medium roast bean, it packed a lot of flavour.  The dark roast was my favorite (could be that I’m biased – hahaha), as it packed that extra bold flavor that I enjoy.  Again, the coffee was smooth and very enjoyable to drink.  I very much enjoyed the information postcard that came with these coffees, it elevates the experience to have that little bit of background knowledge of the area while sipping the coffee.  The Coffee History cards were a nice way to reference the flavor notes and put a name to what I was tasting.  I can’t wait to keep tasting the world of Coffee, from the comfort of my sofa.

I also received a delicious-looking recipe for Chocolate waffles & Coffee whipped cream. I need to try this asap!

On the third card was information about two new flavours of Sm’Oaty: Cocoa & Vanilla and Banana & Strawberry. Plus a coupon for $5 off my next Sm’Oaty purchase.

As a welcome gift, I chose the Recipe booklet – No.1. It includes health information about oats, how to make the perfect breakfast bowl, amazing recipes for muesli, overnight oatmeals, healthy cinnamon rolls, heavenly chocolate waffles, open face apple pie, blueberry crepes, stuffed dates, homemade chai tea latte, and blueberry scones.

My “build you own Oatbox plan” included:

  • Strawberry & White Chocolate Oatmeal
  • Birthday Cake Granola
  • Espresso, Chocolate and Toasted Pecans Granola
  • Iced Coffee Granola
  • Quadruple Chocolate Granola
  • Salted Caramel Granola

As you can tell from my selection, I am not a huge oatmeal fan. I much prefer granola. Of course, I did need to try at least one bag of oatmeal so I chose the monthly special: Strawberry & White Chocolate. It included small bits of freeze-dried strawberries and white chocolate chips that melted to create sweeter-tasting oatmeal. The whole family found the ratio for water to oatmeal did not make the oatmeal as thick as we like it but actually quite watery. Once we figured out the perfect measurements, the members of my family who are oatmeal lovers did really enjoy the taste of the oatmeal.

How can you go wrong with Birthday Cake granola??? It was my birthday a few weeks ago and as a special birthday treat Oatbox gave me the Birthday Cake granola FREE!!! How could I not sign-up to get that!? It is such a fun flavoured granola, complete with sprinkles and all! Such a nice sweet treat for my birthday!

The Salted Caramel was the number one pick from everyone in my family and no surprise was the first bag we opened. However, tasty and crunchy it was, it was also a slight let-down. It wasn’t as sweet or caramel flavour as we were hoping for. It tasted much like regular granola (which isn’t a bad thing!)

Quadruple Chocolate has still yet to be opened. Along with our regular cereals, how can we have six bags of granola on the go. Once we eat down some of the open packages we can’t wait to try this one!

The Espresso, Chocolate, and Toasted Pecans and Iced Coffee both have small amounts of coffee in, so naturally, my children will not be having these. My plan worked. Now Mom and Dad, don’t have to share!

Recommendations: I have heard a lot about the Canadian-based Oatbox over the years but never actually tried them myself. Maybe I just assumed that the bags would be small and not worth the price. Or maybe I thought it was only oatmeal (which isn’t my favorite). I was wrong and delightfully surprised! Once the email from Oatbox came into my inbox that said I could get a FREE Birthday Cake granola during February, I began searching their website to learn more about what they offered. I was blown away by the variety of products: granolas, oatmeal, smoothies, coffees, breakfast bars, and more. Some of the flavours are constant every month but there are a few of the monthly specials that caught my eye and what can I say… I am very pleased with my first Oatbox! I loved choosing my favorite flavours in the build you own plan box and it is so easy to cancel if you only want it for a month or a few months. My family is huge into breakfast cereals and especially granola, so I’m sure they will be expecting an Oatbox to arrive in the mail more often. I wonder what flavours we will get next time?

Have you tried Oatbox? What are your favorite products?
