Our recipes this week included:

  • Loaded Greek-Inspired Burgers with Yogurt Sauce & Sweet Potato Rounds
  • Curried Beef Samosa-Style Bowl with Basmati Rice & Mango Chutney
  • Spicy Vietnamese-Inspired Chicken Stir-Fry with Veggies & Steamed Rice

Recipe #1: Loaded Greek-Inspired Burgers with Yogurt Sauce & Sweet Potato Rounds

Cooking time: 30 minutes

Servings: 4

All the ingredients were provided for us to make the meal. The only things we needed from our pantry were the oil and salt & pepper as well as the baking equipment.

There were two substitutions with this recipe. Instead of sweet potatoes, we received small potatoes, not a big deal, my daughter loves sweet potatoes but these were delicious too. Also, instead of artisan buns, we received ciabatta buns which were so good!

The instructions were very straightforward. Some chopping, some mixing, some frying then cook and assemble as instructed.

Our meal was for our family of 4 and there was plenty of food for everyone. There were no leftovers, but everyone was stuffed!

This was the first Chef’s Plate meal the family chose to try! It was a huge success, the whole family loved it! It was simple enough that even our 12-year-old loved helping to make it. And best of all no one complained about what was for dinner.

Recipe #2: Curried Beef Samosa-Style Bowl with Basmati Rice & Mango Chutney

Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Servings: 4

This meal took just over 15 minutes to make, so quick and so delicious.

The longest part was waiting for the rice to cook. Other than that all that was required was to cook the beef, and veggies, then mix up the sauces and serve.

The mango chutney and garlic aioli sauces took this simple meal to a whole new level. The combination of flavors was unbelievable and made us want to keep coming back for more.

There was so much food that we even saved some for leftovers the next day. I couldn’t wait for lunch! Yum!!!

Recipe #3: Spicy Vietnamese-Inspired Chicken Stir-Fry with Veggies & Steamed Rice

Servings: 4

As our last meal of the week, we couldn’t wait to try a Vietnamese-inspired rice dish. The whole family loves going out for Vietnamese food, so we thought this would be fantastic!

Another simple meal that the whole family helped make. All that was required was to cook the rice, ground chicken, and veggies, and then serve it.

There was plenty of food to feed our family of 4, however, the flavor was lacking and there was a minimal amount of vegetables.

The optional jalapeno peppers were a nice touch, but overall the meal was good, just not as amazing as we had hoped for.  It lacked anything special or unique.

Verdict: Navigating the role of chief meal planner and creator in our household, I’ve experienced firsthand the challenge of conjuring up enticing and flavorful recipes for my family. It’s easy to fall into the routine of preparing the same meals week after week, and while the rest of the family may not tire of them, I certainly do – both in the preparation and consumption. The arrival of Chefs Plate at my doorstep was a delightful deviation from the norm. Choosing from a diverse range of meal recipes, I aimed to introduce new flavors to our family palate while ensuring the kids would still enjoy the experience.

What pleasantly surprised me was the efficiency and relative ease with which each recipe came together. Foolproof, you might say. We not only discovered new dishes but also ones that resonated with the entire family. The meals are straightforward yet innovative, providing the flexibility to adjust spice levels or add extra sauce tailored to each household member’s taste.

While some may argue that meal kit delivery services tend to be pricier than traditional grocery shopping, others enjoy the zero food waste that comes with meal prep kits, like Chefs Plate. Balancing the desire for quality with budget-conscious choices, I recognize the importance of a good deal when it comes to food. Check out the enticing new member coupon code mentioned at the top of this review to not only save on costs but also alleviate the dinner decision dilemma. After all, we all need to eat, and scoring a great deal on delicious meals is a satisfying way to make dinnertime both enjoyable and affordable!

Tokyo Treat – December 2023 Snacktacular Christmas Box Review:

Inside every Tokyo Treat box, uncover a delightful array of 15-20 Japanese snacks, meticulously curated to surprise and gratify your taste buds. Get ready for the thrill of discovering uniquely flavored KitKats, a signature treat in every package. And that’s not all – dive into the cultural richness behind the monthly theme with the enlightening English booklet included. This all-encompassing guide unfolds the chosen theme’s significance in Japanese culture, offering detailed descriptions of each snack. Plus, it goes the extra mile by spotlighting common allergens and presenting vegetarian-friendly options for your utmost convenience.

Did you know?

In Japan, Christmas became popular in the 1950s, however, it is not an official holiday. Japan shares many of the same Christmas traditions as Western countries, such as Christmas light decorations, Christmas markets, and playing in a winter wonderland of snow. One tradition that differs is that the Japanese enjoy a KFC Christmas dinner vs the traditional turkey or ham dinner.

What snacks are inside the TokyoTreat Snacktacular Christmas Box?

KitKat Strawberry Chocolate Cake

Rich, creamy, and decadent- what more could we wish for with these strawberry-chocolate cake KitKats!

I love KitKats, they are my favorite chocolate bar, so getting to sample different flavors each month is so much fun! The chocolate cake image on this packaging made me excited to try these KitKats. They look like an original KitKat bar but once you taste them, they have a rich, dark chocolate flavor as opposed to the original milk chocolate. The strawberry flavor is subtle but adds a nice variation from the original. Everyone in the family enjoyed the Strawberry Chocolate Cake KitKat bars. I wonder what the flavor will be next month?

Snow Sugar Karinto

This unique Japanese snack features a light dough fried to crispy perfection, with a sweet and sesame flavor!

I was unsure about these at first, but as I try them again, I cannot stop eating them. The sweet sugary outside combined with a crunchy dough keeps making me want more. The sesame flavor is very subtle and I can only taste hints of it. Needless to say, the more I eat, the more I like them. They are the perfect snack for Christmas time with sugar crystals that sparkle like snowflakes.

Premium Ghana Chocolate Caramel

These creamy, velvety chocolate squares are the perfect blend of cacao and caramel.

In case you can’t tell I am a big sweets fan! And I love these caramel chocolates. Each one is individually wrapped giving them a high-end look. A creamy caramel layer on top of a dark chocolate layer creates the perfect combination of sweet goodness. I have tried this brand before in past TokyoTreat boxes and have loved the chocolates each time.

Christmas Pizza Corn Snacks

These corn snacks are a mouthwatering fusion of savory pizza flavors with a holiday twist.

These corn puffs come in the cutest Christmas-themed packaging. They have a light, crispy, melt-in-your-mouth texture with a subtle pizza taste. They are so delicious and airy that I could eat the whole bag in one sitting!

Pure Potato Truffle & Rock Salt

Each chip is a crunchy blast of strong and luxurious truffle flavor!

Okay, funny story… We are a family that does not like mushrooms or anything mushroom flavor (yes, I know truffles and mushrooms are not the same thing). So when the kids saw these chips, they dove right in. I asked if they knew what truffles were and they only knew of chocolate truffles. So I kept my lips shut! Fast-forward the kids were feeling brave trying all the different snacks this month, so they ate these chips… and loved them! Then I told them what a truffle was, and surprisingly the pickiest kid kept eating! The whole family, myself included thoroughly enjoyed these truffle chips. The normal crunchiness of chips with a subtle truffle taste. I’d eat these again!

Snowball Marshmallow

This fluffy marshmallow is just like a perfect snowball and has a sweet Japanese bean paste filling!

Some of us in the family love marshmallows others not so much and with the combined unique bean paste filling, this was probably our least favorite snack this month. Once I cut it in half it looked like an egg, which immediately turned the kids off. We all tried a small bite, but next time will pass on anything with bean paste and marshmallows together.

Streamer Marshmallow Stick

Elevate your holiday celebrations with this festive marshmallow!

The kids both loved this fluffy marshmallow swirl. It was soft and airy and tasted like a marshmallow but with pretty candy cane stripes. It was eaten in a matter of seconds, that’s how much they liked it!

Christmas Crunch Mix

This snack is the perfect blend of crunchy, salty, and white chocolate arare (rice cracker bites) and is sure to please any party guests!

The packaging is adorable and perfectly themed for Christmas time as a snack for kids or friends. The snacks inside were unique. They weren’t bad flavorwise, but rather an odd assortment. A few crunchy, a few chocolatey, and one pink!? In my opinion, I would say that this combination doesn’t go together. This Christmas crunch mix was not a fan favorite in our house.

Don Don Yaki Tonkatsu Sauce

This bite-sized puffed cracker snack is packed with a delicious umami sauce flavor!

Surprisingly, I really enjoyed this snack. The cartoon images on the packaging were a little silly but cute and inside were these puffed cracker bits. They were very crunchy with a salty, soy sauce flavor. Umami is a sauce that I have no experience with, but I like it!

Chocolate Candy Cane

It’s filled with tiny bites of sweet candy-coated chocolate!

These little chocolate balls were an absolute delight for my kids. The tiny size makes them so much fun to eat and also prevents them from eating too fast. This is the second time we had these mini chocolate balls in a TokyoTreat box.

Sour Cream Potato Crackers

‘Tis the season to savor with these zesty and tangy sour cream potato crackers!

I don’t normally like anything sour cream flavored, however, the texture of the cracker was light and crunchy with only a subtle sour cream taste. The combination of the thin cracker flavor and sour cream was very enjoyable. I even went back for seconds!

Christmas Kokutou Donut

Its uniquely sweet and earthy flavor comes from Okinawa brown sugar.

While the Christmas Kokutou Donut itself doesn’t look aesthetically pleasing, it comes in a cute, festive Christmas package. The donut has a rich sweet flavor and a dry texture. This is an unusual texture and flavor that I was not really fond of.

Calpis Soda

Calpis, also known as Calpico, is a refreshingly light milk-based soda that is sure to be the star of the show!

At first, the family was a little apprehensive about this milk-based soda. We put it in the refrigerator to let it cool and we carried on sampling the other snacks. Once it was chilled, I was the first to taste it. I pretended to be disgusted because it was so delicious and I didn’t want to share it with the rest of the family. They quickly caught on and tried some for themselves. They all loved it! It didn’t have a milk taste, but rather a slight citrus flavor with bubbles. So yummy! I’d love to have this soda again!

Spicy Kitakata Ramen

Warm up on a chilly winter night with this spicy Kitakakta-style ramen, famous for its thick, curly noodles and rich soy sauce broth!

Ramen is a big hit in our house. My husband is always up for trying new and spicy flavors of ramen. Then our kids always want to eat at least a bite or two or all of it. We were looking forward to these new thicker, flatter ramen-style noodles. The sauce packed a good spicy punch, but the flavor was lacking. Both my husband and I thought this ramen didn’t have anything that made us want to buy it again. It was good, but there wasn’t anything memorable.

Christmas Cake Gummies

These adorable mini cookies have the perfect amount of sweetness and crunch!

You know what they say, ‘save the best for last‘ and that’s exactly what we did. This isn’t the Christmas Cake your grandma makes, these are delicious chewy strawberry flavor gummies in adorable cake slice pieces, that together make a whole cake. They taste amazing! With a rich strawberry flavor and the perfect chewy texture, our family gobbled these up within minutes.

Tokyo Treat – October 2023 Halloween SnackHaul Box Review:

Within every Tokyo Treat box, you will discover a delightful assortment of 15-20 Japanese snacks, carefully curated to surprise and satisfy your taste buds. Anticipate the excitement of exploring unique flavored KitKats, a signature inclusion in each package. Moreover, you can delve into the rich cultural significance behind the monthly theme through the informative English booklet enclosed. This comprehensive guide explains the chosen theme’s relevance to Japanese culture and provides detailed descriptions of each snack, highlighting common allergens and vegetarian-friendly options for your convenience.

Did you know?

Halloween didn’t hold significant traction within Japanese culture until 1997, marked by the inception of Disney’s Happy Halloween event. Nevertheless, Japan’s pre-existing fondness for cosplay and love for scary movies seamlessly paved the way for the assimilation of a Westernized Halloween culture. Coupled with the increase of international schools and English language education, young ones are now introduced to the traditions of trick-or-treating and Halloween festivities from an early age. Today, this celebration has evolved into a major event, Shibuya Scramble, drawing in over 1 million participants annually and transforming the bustling location into a colossal, vibrant costume extravaganza.

What snacks are inside the TokyoTreat Halloween SnackHaul Box?

KitKat Sweet Potato

Enjoy the sweet smell and subtle flavor of these white choco sweet potato KitKats!

I love trying these fun, new-to-us KitKats. In past boxes, we have tried the peach flavor and Lucky Daifuku. The KitKat sweet potato was unexpectedly sweet and citrusy, combined with a faint flavor of savory potatoes! The whole family really enjoyed them.

Koikeya Salt & Sesame Oil Potato Chips

Crunch into these thick-cut, golden potato chips infused with savory sesame oil & salt!

These salt and sesame oil chips had the perfect level of potato crunch and provided an amazing, mouth-watering flavor. I loved the touches of sesame seed oil! I would have these again!

Kobe Japanese Cola

Straight from Kobe, this drink is sweetened with Japanese citrus extracts for a unique flavor.

This drink is a must! Kobe Cola had such a striking citrusy flavor, along with the familiar taste of refreshing cola, like Coca-Cola and Pepsi. I chilled it in the fridge and it was delicious!

Tohato Caramel Corn Puffs

Soft, crispy, and melt-in-your-mouth, this sweetened corn-puff snack is a Halloween classic!

These corn puffs were so delicious! A favorite snack among at least one member of the family… myself. They were lightly crispy with a melt-in-your-mouth texture and a delicious sweet caramel coating. If I got these in my Halloween bag when I was little I would have been a very happy girl.

Polinky Mentaiko Corn Snacks

These savory corn snacks have a light mentaiko, or pickled pollack roe, flavor with just a hint of spicy!

The Polinky Mentaiko Corn Snacks was one of the best snacks included! There was no seafood taste whatsoever, but there was a superb spicy finish! I would definitely recommend this snack to anyone who is a light spice lover. Our kids in the household were worried when they saw that there may be seafood allergens in these, but they loved them!

Halloween Tomato Pretz

The crispy biscuit-pretzel texture and mouth-watering, savory tomato flavor are unmatched!

These pretzel sticks were so yummy! A skinny pretzel with a delicious tomato flavor. They were reminiscent of pocky sticks but with a savory flavor. They make the perfect snack and are so good so it’s hard to eat just one. They didn’t last long in our house.

Halloween Jelly Bean Gummies

Try them in either ghostly grape, creepy cola, or ghoulish ginger ale flavor!

The most amazing candy I have ever eaten! These jelly bean gummies are something I have never had before, but I need to have more of them in my life. First, the flavors were super. They are so flavourful and the taste was exactly what I expected; grape, cola, and ginger ale. Second, the texture was amazing! They had an outside shell of a jelly bean but the inside was a firm but chewy gummy that lasted longer than many other gummies. Third, that cola taste was amazing! You can never go wrong with cola candies!

Monster Bubble Gum Energy Drink Flavor

Treat yourself to this monster-theme bubble gum with an electrifying flavor!

This gum started out with the best flavor and a super soft almost gooey texture. My daughter, in particular, loved them but said that the flavor didn’t last long. With three pieces to a package, they would be awesome trick-or-treating candy for Halloween.

Tanuki Yakisoba

This vegetarian-friendly, savory yakisoba is best enjoyed with your favorite toppings!

In our house, we love ramen noodles. We tend to favor the ones without seafood, so were very happy that is one was vegetarian. The flavor in this yakisoba was delicious and my husband in particular loved them! I also love that there was a recipe included in my TokyoTreat booklet.

Pokemon Halloween Choco Pie

The lightly sweet whipped cream is wrapped in yummy cake layers and a rich chocolate coating!

Once we saw the Pokemon package, we knew this would be a huge hit in our house! Pokemon snacks, how can anyone ever go wrong? This treat was no exception. It didn’t come out of the package without breaking a bit, but sometimes the best foods are the messiest, and that was the case here and it didn’t last long once everyone took a piece. I guess you can say we are fans of chocolate, whipping cream, and a light cookie layer. This was very similar to a wagon wheel, which is a very common school snack and Halloween treat for kiddos.

Black Thunder Cookie Bar

This beloved treat is crunchy, creamy, and has a perfect cookie-chocolate ratio!

This one reminded me of a small chocolate bar but with an Oreo cookie crumble throughout. A perfect treat for a chocoholic! It was very sweet, but so tasty! One bite for each member of the family and it was done. We all were very impressed.

Koala March Halloween

With crispy biscuit coating and creamy chocolate filling, these are sure to please any trick-or-treater!

These are the cutest little koala cookies. I’ve never seen a snack so cute with an adorable image right on the cookie. I couldn’t wait to taste them. Sadly these looked better than they tasted. They lacked flavor, other than a subtle cookie taste.

Teeny Tiny Monster Chocolates

These cute tiny chocolates come in 5 fun flavors: milk choco, sweet soybean powder, strawberry, banana, and melon!

These teeny tiny chocolate cubes were so small and adorable. I was apprehensive about a few of the flavors, but because of their size, the flavor was not overwhelming. Our family had mixed reviews regarding these, some of us loved them, while others thought they lacked flavor.

Halloween Mini Hi-Chew

Bite into these sweet and chewy mini Hi-Chews, perfect for a night of trick-or-treating!

The word Hi-chew comes with a lot of hype around our house. Our kids seem to think of them as the holy grail of candy and to get them in their trick-or-treat bag on Halloween would be the best thing ever! These hi-chews were no doubt one of the top candies in this month’s TokyoTreat box.

Mini Halloween Cookies

These adorable mini cookies have the perfect amount of sweetness and crunch!

These are the tiniest cookie drops. A fun, snack for inside your Halloween bag. My family wasn’t super impressed with the flavor and the kids thought they had a slight seafood taste, but maybe after all the other sweets in this box our tastebuds needed a cleanse before we dove into sampling these cookies.

Why We Love the TokyoTreat October 2023 Halloween SnackHaul Box:

Our family loves the TokyoTreat box! Each month it delivers us a new experience that our whole family can share. The TokyoTreat box opens our eyes to new textures and flavors that we otherwise would never have experienced. We get a glimpse into the Japanese culture and all their fun and often cute-looking snacks, that are much harder to find in Canada.

This month’s Halloween SnackHaul box was a very big thumbs-up from the whole family! I can honestly say collectively this was our favorite TokyoTreat box to date. It included the perfect mix of sweet treats and savory treats, as well as a drink and a noodle snack meal. Everyone tried everything and there were so many amazing snacks that we will be shopping for in the future.

For our family, the TokyoTreat box isn’t just a monthly subscription box; it’s like embarking on an exciting snacking adventure that we all enjoy together and we can’t wait for the next box we get to enjoy together!

Tokyo Treat – April 2023 “Sakura Picnic Party” Box Review:

Each Tokyo Treat box comes with 15-20 Japanese snacks. One of the snacks is almost always a unique flavored KitKat. Your box will also include an information booklet in English, explaining why they chose the monthly theme and what it represents to Japanese people. This booklet also describes each snack, common allergens, and if it’s vegetarian-friendly.

Did you know?

Hanami is the Japanese tradition of welcoming spring once the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. People all over Japan head outdoors to have cherry blossom viewing parties which often involve bento boxes and sharing food under these beautiful blossoms.

KitKat Peach

All dressed up and bursting with juicy peach flavor, these sweet and fruity KitKats are a spring favor fave!

The best KitKat we have ever tasted! If you love peaches or anything peach-flavored, you need to try these mini Peach KitKat bars. They are delicious!!! They are covered in a peach-flavored white chocolate (I think?) that gives them a light peach taste. It’s not overpowering, but just the right amount. They are the perfect snack size to share or take on the go.

Sakura Senbei

Crunch into these salty snacks with a floral twist- they’re made with real cherry blossom leaves!

I had no idea there was a snack made out of cherry blossom leaves. Who would ever have thought? The taste was very different than what we are used to. These bite-sized rice crackers have a conventional savory flavor, but they also have a floral twist thanks to the taste of cherry blossom leaves.  It’s an unexpected mix, but it turns out to be pretty good, and it’s an intriguing take on the traditional flavors of sweet cherry blossoms.

Sakura Manju

A sakura season staple, this adorable sweet is filled with pink cherry blossom-flavored sweet bean paste!

This is a traditional pastry that is popular during sakura season in Japan. It is a soft cookie-like outside filled with the traditional sakura-scented sweet red bean paste. The outside pastry tasted delicious and reminded us of a fig newton bar, but our taste buds are still getting familiar with the red bean taste.

Sakura Matcha Cookie Bites

Bite into a popular spring flavor combo made in heaven- sakura and matcha!

These tiny cookie bites have an outside layer that is made of matcha cookie. It’s flaky and has a taste that is a tad on the bitter side.  This contrasts perfectly with the sweet sakura cream filling that together creates a delicious balance in both flavor and texture.

Sakura Cherry Candy

These hard candies are flavored with the juice of Yamagata Prefecture’s famously sweet Sato Nishiki cherries!

These candies are a favorite in our house! They have a bold sweet cherry flavor that lasts the whole way through. We only wish that there were more candies in this package. They were that good!

Strawberry King Cider

Relish this refreshing sakura-colored strawberry soda made with sweet Amaou Strawberries!

Another fan favorite among everyone in our house! This soda, or pop as we call it, was absolutely delicious. It was sweet with the perfect amount of strawberry flavoring giving you a yummy refreshing drink. And how adorable is that bottle?!

Premium Ghana Truffle

They have three layers: a creamy milk chocolate ganache center, a coating of velvety dark chocolate, and a dusting of cocoa powder.

These chocolates are very similar to the truffles that we have in North America. A creamy rich dark chocolate taste.

Ghana Chocolate Cake Bites

Soft and scrumptious, these cute bite-sized pillows are packed with chocolatey flavor!

These chocolate bites weren’t as rich of a flavor as the truffles. They have a harder outer chocolate coating with a soft sponge-like cake inside. They have a slight cherry or amaretto taste? (I can’t place the taste).

Mini Caplico

Shaped like mini ice cream cones, these have two layers of sweet cream filling inside a savor, crispy wafer!

We were lucky to get two mini cones, one strawberry and one cherry blossom. So cute and fun to eat. The strawberry tasted like the strawberry ginza rusk from February 2023’s Tokyo Treat box. My girls loved that the filling went all the way to the bottom of the wafer. They are the perfect size for snacking.

Sour Paper Candy Cola

These chewy candies may be paper thin, but they’re blooming with cola flavor.

This is a chewy candy treat similar to what I remember having as a child. Soft and sweet! The Coke flavor strap is covered in tangy, sugar which makes this candy so good! I only wish this snack came with more candy strips, one isn’t enough to share.

Piri-Kara Spicy Ramen

With a delicate balance of spice and flavor, this vegetarian ramen is bringing the heat to the picnic party!

This ramen is perfect for a quick lunch or snack. Mostly my husband ate this ramen as its his favorite! I did manage to snag a few bites. I was expecting it to have some heat, but it was more mild than anticipated. The light umami vegetable seasoning creates just the right amount of flavor.

Kuppy Ramune

They come in a sweet and sour mouth-watering assortment of orange, strawberry, and lemon flavors!

These are a firm candy that dissolves into a powdery texture when you bit or suck on them. They reminded us of Sweet Tarts, but the flavor was milder than expected. The kids loved crunching on these and it was the perfect amount to share.

Texas Corn Okonomiyaki

This soft corn snack is inspired by the Japanese dish, Okonomiyaki. Okonomiyaki is a popular Japanese dish similar to a pancake, made with a mixture of ingredients like cabbage, egg, meat, cheese, onion, and seafood. Have you tried Okonomiyaki before?

Similar in texture to a cheese puff or cheesy, but with more vegetable flavors and spices. They are crunchy when chewed and melt in your mouth when sucked on. Even with the slight seafood flavor, these were really tasty!

Full Moon Pon Cracker

This traditional soy sauce-flavored rice cracker is crisp, savory, and great for sharing!

This is a traditional soy sauce-flavored cracker only larger. I have come to know this taste well as it comes in our snacking trail mix. They are crispy and crunchy with a salty coating.

Coal Lollipop Dipper

Open the candy bag (carefully!), take a lick of the cola-flavored lollipop, then dip it into the candy powder for a bubbly burst of flavor.

My youngest says this was yummy! Sadly the rest of the family didn’t even get a taste, but we can imagine how good it was if she liked it. She said the powder was sweet tasting but she preferred to have the lollipop by itself.

Verdict:

We love the selection and variety of unique and familiar snacks inside each TokyoTreat box. This month there are many snacks that are completely new to us, both in flavor and texture. This is the first time we have experienced any Sakura snacks, it is something we knew very little about before receiving our TokyoTreat box. The peach KitKat was for sure the biggest favorite in our house. Along with the strawberry cider and sakura cherry candies. As well, there were a few really delicious and familiar-tasting snacks but with a slight twist, such as coke-flavored candy. We are still trying to wrap our taste buds around the red bean paste flavor.

We had so much fun with this unboxing and snacking, it ended up taking half a day. We loved trying new snacks, finding new favorite snacks, and this month sharing snacks with our friends! The TokyoTreat box is not only a monthly subscription box but also a unique snacking experience for us as a family.\

Tokyo Treat – February 2023 “My Snackin’ Valentine” Box Review:

Each Tokyo Treat box comes with 15-20 Japanese snacks. One of the snacks is almost always not your traditional flavored KitKat. Your box will also include an information booklet in English, explaining why they chose the monthly theme and what it represents to Japanese people. This booklet also describes each snack, common allergens, and if it’s vegetarian-friendly.

Did you know?

Japan has put its own spin on Valentine’s Day. Instead of men giving women chocolates and flowers as is the case in western cultures, in Japan women are expected to give men chocolates.

In Japan, the month of February is all about strawberries!

KitKat Lucky Daifuku

Here’s your lucky break in love! These lucky KitKats are filled with sweet azuki bean and mochi flavors.

The whole family was so excited to try a new flavor of KitKat. For us, it was a new flavor, unlike anything we’d had before. They we so yummy, that my husband gobbled them all up before anyone else could even have seconds.

Maruko-chan Arare

Lightly flavored with soy sauce and honey. Crunch into these sweet and savory pillows of fried perfection!

This snack took me right back to a trail mix snack I had when I was a kid. The dry, crunchy texture was the perfect compliment to the sweet soy sauce taste. It was the perfect snack size for the whole family to try a few each.

Mini Strawberry Thunder

This little guy might just steal your heart! Half crunchy milk chocolate & half strawberry coating – a match made in heaven!

This reminded me of a chocolate-dipped strawberry and who doesn’t love chocolate-dipped strawberries?! The sweet, fruity treat didn’t last long in our house.

Pakila Chocolate Wafers

Delectably rich milk chocolate and almonds are sandwiched between layers of crispy wafer goodness.

A fan favorite in our house! A light, crispy, and flaky chocolate and nutty taste are the perfect snacking treat. These were a must to satisfy my afternoon sweet tooth and were perfect for kids’ lunches. The package was large enough that we each had a few on multiple different occasions.

Qoo Peack Jelly Drink

Made with real peach juice, squeeze the pouch to enjoy its fun, fruity, and refreshing flavor. It tastes better cold, so make sure you chill first!

My first impressions were that it had a very unique jelly texture, but my kids loved the peach taste so much that they drank it all right away. Not even that drop on the counter went to waste.

Love Umbrella Chocolate

The base of this love umbrella is filled with cute rainbow coated chocolates. Savor the moment with these sweet little treats.

Another fan favorite among the littles in the house. These teeny tiny chocolate balls are just so cute, that they had to be eaten all in one day. At least the small size prevents them from eating too fast!

Pure Petit Grape Gummy

Made with grape puree and bursting with intense grape flavor, these addictively juicy gummies are dusted with a light sour powder.

One of my personal favorite treats in this box! They have such a rich and delicious grape flavor and the perfect gummy texture. My only complaint is that the package was way too small!

Mini Asparagus Biscuits

Made with premium strawberries from Japan’s Tochigi prefecture, you’re sure to become infatuated with these sweet buttery snacks!

I love the name so much! And it… almost, stopped my kids from even trying these. The biscuits had almost a wet feel, which I can’t describe, but that didn’t stop the family from eating them all! They had the texture of a cookie or cracker but with the sweetness of strawberries.

Strawberry Ginza Rusk

Steady your heart and take a bite of light and airy Ginza Rusk! Its strawberry flavor will keep you coming back for more.

This was a brand new type of snack for us. I’m not even sure what product it would be similar to in Canada. They reminded me of sponge toffee or dehydrated strawberry cake squares, if that’s a thing. Either way, they had a yummy taste and I would love to try more in different flavors.

Suppamucho Sour Plum Chips

Prepare to be heartstruck! These sour plum chips have a tart and fruity flavor – with a sour punch!
These were probably the best and one of the most unlikely surprises from inside the Valentine’s Day box. Not really sour but they had the most delicious flavor that kept making me want to go back for more until eventually, the whole bag was empty. The whole family agreed, these were amazing!!! Now I just need to find out where to buy more…

Kinako Stick

Covered in roasted soybean flour, kinako sticks are traditional Japanese sweets known for their chewy texture and nutty flavor.

I think everyone in our family can agree this was our least favorite item from the box. We each gave it an honest try, but the soybean flour on the outside wasn’t something that we are used to for our sweets.

Choco Cake

These light and fluffy cakes are coated with milk chocolate- and choc-full of love!

These were super yummy chocolate cookies. They reminded me of outside cookies from wagon wheels and they were the perfect snack size.

Shrimp Senbei

These crispy rice crackers are made with a delicious blend of mild Japanese spices, making them shrimply irresistible!

My family gave these snacks a good effort but most of us do not enjoy eating anything fishy, and they had a strong fish smell. However, my husband loved these and just kept eating them. So I guess it’s all about personal preference, some like certain foods, and others don’t like those same foods.

Spicy Peanut Arare

Don’t worry, these crunchy snacks aren’t TOO spicy. But they’ll still set your heart on fire!

We didn’t taste much heat at all. But we still enjoyed these crunchy bite-sized bits of rice cracker yum!

Karai! Spicy Noodles

Like a fiery romance, this ramen is bold and full of heat! Its complex and spicy flavors will set your heart ablaze!

OMG! This was so delicious with a great spicy flavor. My husband is ramen-obsessed, so this made him so happy! And of course, once he said that it didn’t taste like seafood, I had to try at least a bit or two or three… We both could definitely have eaten more!

Verdict: It was our first time experiencing the Tokyo Treat box and honesty our first time trying almost everything in this box. We have tried a few different Japanese snacks from friends over the years, but not to the extent of what was inside my box. Our minds and tastebuds got to experience so many new tastes and textures. In total, we received fifteen snacks in our February box, enough for our family of four to share them all and have leftovers. Some of the snacks were smaller individual serving sizes, but others, such as the KitKat had ten individually wrapped twin bars! The whole family fell in love with some new and delicious flavors. The Sour Plum Chips, Pure Petit Grape Gummies, and Spicy Ramen noodles are probably the overall favorites. The Tokyo Treat box was a great cultural experience for our whole family to learn and try some new treats. I would highly recommend it to individuals, couples, and families who up are for a new taste adventure or just love Japan! Either way, I hope you discover some new favorite Japanese snacks as well!
