First-time subscribers will receive these items (if you’re not a subscriber yet, you can sign-up here!):

  • Shiro Ebi Senbei

Kuze Fuku & Co., a premium Japanese brand, collaborated with Hinodeya, who has been crafting incredible snacks for a century. This senbei is no exception. It’s flavored with shiroebi (white shrimp) and Kuze Fuku’s Traditional Umami Dashi for the ultimate savory rice cracker!

  • White Strawberry

This is the world’s first chocolate-infused strawberry! Strawberries are harvested, freeze-dried, infused with white chocolate, and cooled, for a chocolate with all the flavor of a fresh strawberry!

  • Mocchan Dango Mochi
Hanami dango is a variety of sticky rice dumplings commonly enjoyed during the spring hanami (flower viewing) season. This trio of dango is covered in sugar and colored in the traditional pink, white, and green.
  • Tottori 20th Century Pear Fromage Biscuit

This delicate biscuit is a luxurious blend of 20th Century Asian Pear (nijiseiki-nashi), rich cheese, and decadent white chocolate.

  • Handmade Yuzu Sake Candy

This candy is hand-crafted by the artisans at Daimonji exclusively for Bokksu. Our version blends yuzu juice and peels with sake for a refreshingly citrusy candy. This candy contains 0.1% alcohol content, so please consume responsibly.

  • Seaweed Tempura: Setouchi Sudachi Citrus Flavor

These addictive seaweed sheets are battered, fried, and flavored with native Japanese sudachi citrus to create a crisp and tangy snack that will leave your taste buds tingling.

  • Edamame Senbei

Made with summer-harvested edamame bits baked into the cracker, this senbei is sprinkled with kinako (roasted soybean powder) and has a deliciously nutty crunch.

  • Dondon Yaki

Named after the sound of the beating taiko drums heard throughout festivals in Japan, these savory senbei are fried and marinated in tonkatsu sauce for a flavor that is tangy, peppery, and a little sweet.

  • Mini Red Bean Crackers

This golden cracker conceals a thin layer of red bean paste that adds a hint of sweetness. Its flavor is inspired by shiruko, a traditional Japanese dessert of sweet red bean porridge.

  • Black Sesame Taiko: Kumamon Design

Each of these seedy “drums” are handmade in Kumamoto, hometown of Kumamon, by roasting almonds and sesame seeds and mixing them by hand with mizuame (sugar syrup) overheat. They’re then hand-pressed into discs and left to cool into this deliciously nutty snack.

  • Matcha Chocolate Stick Cake

This soft cake uses matcha from Uji, Kyoto, which is known for its high-quality matcha. Pairing earthy matcha with bittersweet chocolate chips gives this cake a rich, subtly sweet flavor.

  • Aomori Apple Caramel Yakkoi Sable

This cookie uses apples exclusively from Aomori, Japan’s “apple prefecture.” The addition of sweet apple-caramel butter gives this sable-style cookie a “yakkoi” (soft and chewy) texture.

  • Uni Rice Cracker

These delicious fried crackers pull their lovely umami flavor from uni (sea urchin) and soy sauce. It’s savory and salty without being overly fishy, and the cracker’s oblong shape even looks like the actual sea urchin.

  • Ishigakijima Chili Oil Chips

Ishigakijima is one of the islands of Okinawa Prefecture. Their famous specialties include chili oil from shima togarashi (island red chili pepper), which gives these chips their bright, fiery flavor.

  • Tsukisamu Anpan: Chocolate

Anpan is a sweet roll filled with bean paste. This brownie-like treat gets an upgrade with the addition of rich chocolate! This luscious dessert is best enjoyed paired with hot tea.

  • Ashigara Green Tea Aranami Kurofuji

This green tea comes from the Ashigara district of Hakone. The plants grow slowly with less sunshine than other tea types, producing fewer tannins and resulting in a sweeter tea. When picked, Ashigara tea is also lightly steamed in a process called asamushi that makes a light-colored aromatic tea. Steep the tea bag in 200 ml/7fl oz of hot water for 40 seconds or to taste.

Goodfood Box (Classic Meals, 2 servings & 3 recipes) Review:

The first time you order from Goodfood you will receive a ‘Welcome to the Good Food Family” information booklet. It gives you some background on the company and how they got their start with the goal of helping people create healthy and nutritious meals with ease. They are also firm believers in making the world a better place through local sourcing, recyclable packaging, reduction of food waste, and education about the above.

Before my order was to be delivered I received an email asking if I would like to be part of a pilot program to reduce the use of the large cardboard box that often comes with any food box. I agreed and when my delivery came to the door the lovely gentleman was waiting for me to collect my paper bags from his reusable bin. If I was not home, he would have left my meals in a box as per usual.

Our recipes this week included:

  • Yogurt-Marinated Tandoori Chicken Breasts with Spiced Potatoes & Crunchy Marinated Cucumbers
  • Pan-Seared Salmon with Lemon-Spritzed Lentils & Wilted Greens
  • Empanada-Style Ground Beef Buns with Cilantro Dipping Sauce & Tomato-Pepper Salad

Recipe #1: Yogurt-Marinated Tandoori Chicken Breasts with Spiced Potatoes & Crunchy Marinated Cucumbers

Cooking time: 35 minutes

Servings: 2

As a family, we love meals that are straightforward but have a twist on the norm. This Yogurt-Marinated Tandoori Chicken Breast was just that. It included foods that are common in our house but added a delicious sauce to create a whole new meal.

With a little added chicken breast and potatoes we took this meal from 2 servings to feed our family of 4. A great deal for money-conscious shoppers!

Recipe #2: Pan-Seared Salmon with Lemon-Spritzed Lentils & Wilted Greens

Cooking Time: 10 minutes

Servings: 2

There aren’t many meals that are healthy and quick too! Okay, maybe this took us 15 minutes to cook, but that is pretty good for a complete meal from start to finish. There was not much to cook other than the salmon and some light heating for the lentil mixture.

The meal itself was average. Where it fell flat for our family was the lack of flavor. We love spice and full-flavour foods. The canned lentils were very mushy and bland. This was not a meal we will get again.

Recipe #3: Empanada-Style Ground Beef Buns with Cilantro Dipping Sauce & Tomato-Pepper Salad

Cooking Time: 35 minutes

Servings: 2

Empanadas in 35 minutes… sign me up! The whole family got involved in the making of this meal and it was delicious! The kids enjoyed pressing the dough and were so proud of their final product. There were very few steps and most of the time was allocated to the cooking in the oven.

I love when you can take a meal and really stretch the servings to feed a whole family of four. With the amount of dough included we managed to create 4 empanadas.

As an alternative next time, we may try adding some vegetables to the meat mixture. This was definitely one of our favorite Goodfood meals!

Verdict: With food prices soaring, we are always on the lookout for ways to cut costs and feed our family healthy meals on a budget. We don’t often order meal delivery kits but have been known to try them when they offer sales (which they always do for first-time customers). After having tried almost everyone at least once, we now keep our eyes open for the existing member sales and sign-up then. But we are quick to cancel after the trial ends. That is the key with meal delivery kits, if you don’t want to pay full price, keep tabs on your weekly subscription. It’s so easy to cancel or even pause the week. I know this is a fear for many people.

We love the variety and choices the Candian Goodfood meal delivery kit has to offer. It spices up our routine (no pun intended… haha) and gives our dinnertime meals a well-needed refresh. The meals are often geared at taking 30 minutes or less, which really isn’t much when you think about how long most food takes to cook. We don’t choose meal delivery kits to give us relief from cooking, but to give us new, healthy meal options.

Have you tried Goodfood? If not, don’t forget to use my referral code to save $40 off your first order.

What has been your favorite meal? I love recommendations.

  • Beika Ha Tochigi Ume Zarame

This rice cracker is flavored with ume (Japanese plum), well-balanced by delicious soy sauce. It also has a layer of sugar, for the perfect savory and sweet combo.

  • Strawberry Milk Marshmallow

These treats are unlike any marshmallow we’ve ever tried! Squishy marshmallows are coated in white chocolate that’s kneaded with freeze-dried Polish strawberries. A harmonious combination of fruit and chocolate.

  • Kanagawa Sakura Jelly
This bouncy jelly is flavored with fragrant sakura blossoms! Maker Nature selects vibrant pink flowers and pickles them using Umezu (Ume Plum vinegar) from Kanagawa prefecture. We hope you admire the gorgeous packaging as you chew the jelly!
  • Sakura Chinsuko

An adorable shortbread-like cookie, chinsuko are frequently given as omiyage, or souvenir gifts. This treat is shaped, flavored, and colored like a Japanese cherry blossom!

  • Puré Gummy Premium: Yamanashi White Peach

We love every flavor of Puré gummies, but this premium one is special. Its centers have delicious jam, flavored with white peaches from Yamanashi, Japan’s largest peach producer! The sweet and sour crystals on the outside add a burst of yumminess.

  • Oranda Senbei: Plum Kelp

If you’ve ever had an ume onigiri (plum flavored rice ball), you’ll know that plum and seaweed are an incredible combo! This cracker was made in collaboration with Tamaroen, a decades-old kelp tea maker.

  • Sakura Sweet Cookie

This crispy biscuit has a gorgeous sakura flavor! Japanese cookies like these are mildly sweet so they can pair perfectly with tea, like the sencha we’re featuring in this month’s box.

  • Strawberry Choco Mochi

This mochi is called daifuku, or stuffed mochi. It’s flavored with chocolate and amaou strawberries. Amaou are grown in Fukuoka and referred to as “The King of Strawberries” for their delicious taste.

  • Manyoukashu: Amakara Komaru

These tiny treats are coated in soy sauce sweetened with honey for the ultimate savory party in your mouth.  The packaging has lines from the Man’yoshu: a series of classic Japanese poems!

  • Sakura Bouchée

A bouchée is a small pastry with a sweet filling. This cherry blossom pastry has a sakura flower printed on the cakey buns. Inside is a sweet and soft, cream, infused with aromatic cherry juice!

  • Sakura Mochi

Mochi is a traditional Japanese rice cake made by pounding steamed mochigome (glutinous mochi rice) and rolled in rice flour. Sakura-flavored mochi is a classic hanami (flower viewing) snack and best paired with green tea!

  • Uma Kara Spicy Mentai Burdock Chips

These shatteringly crisp chips are made from gobo, or burdock root. They’re fried and coated in spicy mentai (cod roe) flavoring for a light yet fiery treat.

  • Fujisan Shichihenge

A bag of mixed rice crackers that are shaped like Mount Fuji! Each cracker has an exciting flavor, like matcha, purple potato, and red pepper that illustrates how the beautiful mountain appears at different points in the year.

  • Tsubuyori Komochi: Plum Flavor

Inside this bag, you’ll find four flavors of arare (hail-shaped rice crackers) like seaweed, sesame, and shrimp, which are then flavored with pickled plum. They’re an iconic combo of savory and tangy.

  • Morokoshi Cookie: Sakura Horohoro

Have you ever had a polverone? They’re Spanish cookies made with roasted almond flour! This cookie is inspired by a polverone and uses roasted wheat and azuki bean flour, with an added sakura scent.

  • Spring Gold Green Tea

Boil 80ml/2.7oz of hot water and wait for it to cool to 158°F/70°C (until you can comfortably touch the mug). Steep the tea bag for 30 seconds, then lightly shake the bag up and down before taking it out.
