First-time subscribers will receive these items (if you’re not a subscriber yet, you can sign-up here!):

  • Shiro Ebi Senbei

Kuze Fuku & Co., a premium Japanese brand, collaborated with Hinodeya, who has been crafting incredible snacks for a century. This senbei is no exception. It’s flavored with shiroebi (white shrimp) and Kuze Fuku’s Traditional Umami Dashi for the ultimate savory rice cracker!

  • White Strawberry

This is the world’s first chocolate-infused strawberry! Strawberries are harvested, freeze-dried, infused with white chocolate, and cooled, for a chocolate with all the flavor of a fresh strawberry!

  • Mocchan Dango Mochi
Hanami dango is a variety of sticky rice dumplings commonly enjoyed during the spring hanami (flower viewing) season. This trio of dango is covered in sugar and colored in the traditional pink, white, and green.
  • Tottori 20th Century Pear Fromage Biscuit

This delicate biscuit is a luxurious blend of 20th Century Asian Pear (nijiseiki-nashi), rich cheese, and decadent white chocolate.

  • Handmade Yuzu Sake Candy

This candy is hand-crafted by the artisans at Daimonji exclusively for Bokksu. Our version blends yuzu juice and peels with sake for a refreshingly citrusy candy. This candy contains 0.1% alcohol content, so please consume responsibly.

  • Seaweed Tempura: Setouchi Sudachi Citrus Flavor

These addictive seaweed sheets are battered, fried, and flavored with native Japanese sudachi citrus to create a crisp and tangy snack that will leave your taste buds tingling.

  • Edamame Senbei

Made with summer-harvested edamame bits baked into the cracker, this senbei is sprinkled with kinako (roasted soybean powder) and has a deliciously nutty crunch.

  • Dondon Yaki

Named after the sound of the beating taiko drums heard throughout festivals in Japan, these savory senbei are fried and marinated in tonkatsu sauce for a flavor that is tangy, peppery, and a little sweet.

  • Mini Red Bean Crackers

This golden cracker conceals a thin layer of red bean paste that adds a hint of sweetness. Its flavor is inspired by shiruko, a traditional Japanese dessert of sweet red bean porridge.

  • Black Sesame Taiko: Kumamon Design

Each of these seedy “drums” are handmade in Kumamoto, hometown of Kumamon, by roasting almonds and sesame seeds and mixing them by hand with mizuame (sugar syrup) overheat. They’re then hand-pressed into discs and left to cool into this deliciously nutty snack.

  • Matcha Chocolate Stick Cake

This soft cake uses matcha from Uji, Kyoto, which is known for its high-quality matcha. Pairing earthy matcha with bittersweet chocolate chips gives this cake a rich, subtly sweet flavor.

  • Aomori Apple Caramel Yakkoi Sable

This cookie uses apples exclusively from Aomori, Japan’s “apple prefecture.” The addition of sweet apple-caramel butter gives this sable-style cookie a “yakkoi” (soft and chewy) texture.

  • Uni Rice Cracker

These delicious fried crackers pull their lovely umami flavor from uni (sea urchin) and soy sauce. It’s savory and salty without being overly fishy, and the cracker’s oblong shape even looks like the actual sea urchin.

  • Ishigakijima Chili Oil Chips

Ishigakijima is one of the islands of Okinawa Prefecture. Their famous specialties include chili oil from shima togarashi (island red chili pepper), which gives these chips their bright, fiery flavor.

  • Tsukisamu Anpan: Chocolate

Anpan is a sweet roll filled with bean paste. This brownie-like treat gets an upgrade with the addition of rich chocolate! This luscious dessert is best enjoyed paired with hot tea.

  • Ashigara Green Tea Aranami Kurofuji

This green tea comes from the Ashigara district of Hakone. The plants grow slowly with less sunshine than other tea types, producing fewer tannins and resulting in a sweeter tea. When picked, Ashigara tea is also lightly steamed in a process called asamushi that makes a light-colored aromatic tea. Steep the tea bag in 200 ml/7fl oz of hot water for 40 seconds or to taste.

Fresh Prep Box (2-Person Meal – 2 servings & 2 recipes) Review:

My first reaction to my Fresh Prep “box” (insulated bag) was WOW!!! I could not believe the quality of this reusable cooler bag that my food and recipes were delivered in. The outside of the bag has this really practical, clear pocket to hold the recipes and the “Welcome” card.

The Welcome card outlines all the contact information for the Fresh Prep customer service team and many of the convenient reasons to choose Fresh Prep. Did you know that they have zero waste kits and nearly everything they send in the cooler bags can be reused or recycled?! You can return almost all the packaging and recyclables to Fresh Prep for them to sanitize and reuse or properly recycle.

Inside the insulated cooler bag were all of the ingredients for my weekly meals kept cool with reusable gel ice packs. The meat was packaged separately in its own insulated pouch.

Our recipes this week included:

  • Spicy Chipotle Beef Chili with Scallions & Aged Cheddar Cheese
  • Chicken & Gnocchi with tomato Rosé Sauce, Kale & Crispy Sage

Recipe #1: Spicy Chipotle Beef Chili with Scallions & Aged Cheddar Cheese

Estimated Cooking time: 30 minutes

Difficulty Level: Easy

Servings: 2

All the ingredients were provided for us to make the meal. The instructions were very straightforward. Some chopping, some mixing, some frying then cook as instructed.

Our kit was only for a serving of 2 but we stretched it for our family of 4 with some additional tomatoes, chickpeas, and rice on the side, we expanded our 2 person meal to give us dinner for 4 people plus 2 lunches the next day. We made a lot of chili!!!

Chili is one of my favorite meals and the Fresh Prep chili did not disappoint. We kept the chipotle spice to a minimum for the kids, but then kicked up the flavor for the adults. The garlic bread ciabatta buns sent this meal over the edge! For all the garlic lovers this crushed garlic was so amazing!

Recipe #2: Chicken & Gnocchi with tomato Rosé Sauce, Kale & Crispy Sage

Estimated Cooking Time: 30 minutes

Difficulty Level: Easy

Servings: 2

This meal was only meant to be for two people, but it easily satisfied two adults and one kid (the other kid decided to eat leftover chili from the night before)

We chose gnocchi as something new for the family that we have never tried and knew very little about. The meal was very easy to make. Even our 10-year-old was in the kitchen helping cook.

In our opinion, gnocchi tastes very similar to a perogy but without the filling. Even our very picky daughter ate a fair portion. I know lots of people love gnocchi and you’d probably love this meal, but I think it’s just not for our family. The gnocchi was just very plain and doughy even with the spices.

Verdict: Right from the second my box came, I was loving this ‘new to Alberta’ meal delivery kit. Everything just looked so professional and sleek! Don’t even get me started on the functionality and design of the insulated bag, you need to check it out for yourself in person to really appreciate it. The meals themselves were very straightforward, the card outlined the recipe instructions and ingredients, as well as the nutritional facts. Many of the products came vacuum packaged in airtight contains to maintain freshness. The biggest feature was that the serving size was very generous and allowed for the whole family to eat on a tighter budget using the 2-person meals plan (2 servings). I must be honest I don’t order many of these kits due to the cost value but when you can get 3 meals for FREE on your first box and it feeds your whole family, I am all for that!

Have you tried Fresh Prep yet?!

What has been your favorite meal? I love recommendations.
