ARTSHINE in a Box is a Canadian visual arts subscription box for kids aged 4-100 years old. When you subscribe to the monthly subscription box, each month your child will receive an exciting art kit that explores a different theme and art medium. Some of the lessons and techniques your child may learn are drawing, pastels, painting, 3D pens, and more. Artshine in a Box also has many one-time boxes available: Specialty Boxes (Seasonal), Premium Boxes, Artshine Reads Boxes, and Classroom Kits.
The Artshine company has been around for several years making a difference in many communities in Ontario and Montreal. They provide mobile art programs to schools, churches, youth programs, community centres, retirement homes, and more. Each ARTSHINE in a Box – Specialty Box comes with all the supplies you will need to create a beautiful seasonal-themed art project of your choosing. The structure of an online video tutorial from an Artshine Instructor ensures a wonderful masterpiece will be created and your child will be so proud to show off their artwork!
The ‘Somebody to Love’ Specialty box is the perfect art project for Valentine’s Day and it will make a wonderful gift for someone you love or to keep for yourself.
Each box comes with a guidebook with a few very helpful tips and simple step-by-step instructions that allow you to complete your artwork even without access to a computer and the online tutorial. This guidebook is where you will also find the link and password to access the video tutorial for this project.
Let the artwork begin…
First, you complete some sketches of who you want in your painting. These figures can be customized for each family member or loved one you choose to include in your painting. Adult male or female, young or old child and chosen hairstyles. Plus, add a dog or cat if you like.
Then the sunset painting and blending begins.
The ability to pause and rewind makes sure your child doesn’t miss a step and can go at their own pace without being rushed.
Bonus Projects: A bookmark to colour
Verdict: My kids love Artshine in a Box! This is the second box we have been fortunate enough to receive and it was so much fun! As a mom, I love how my kids can craft and create without me having to plan and gather all the little things, like a paint plate, water cup, paper towel, etc. Then at the end, everything can be popped in the garbage or recycled and clean-up is done. My ten-year-old setup and did the whole painting independently while following along with the online tutorial. She loved sketching and creating her family characters as seen through her eyes. In the end, the painting turned out perfect with Dad, Mom, two cats, and two sisters! The whole process was very straightforward and took just over an hour from start to finish, with only a few minor hiccups along the way, as would be expected from a perfectionist.
With many extracurricular classes being canceled, due to Covid and the world the way it is, Artshine boxes allow kids to have fun and create art in a safe way. The video tutorials are like a private instructor teaching you, with the ability to pause and replay as often as needed. With their constantly expanding collection, you are bound to find the perfect subscription box for the crafter in your life or even yourself. This is the third Creative Woman Kit-of-the-Month Club I have completed and I have been lucky enough to review many of the other Annie’s Kit Clubs, see them all here. Often with the Annie’s Kit Club boxes, there is one or two standard first boxes that you will receive for your first time subscribing. My first subscription was the Birdhouse Cottage, yours might be something different. Each of the kits is very straightforward with easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions and each subscription is focused on a different crafting technique. The Crystal Suncatcher focused on wire crafting, which was new to me. Once you understood the process, it was simple and easy to duplicate for the following steps. The Crystal Suncatcher only took me a few hours to complete and it looks quite beautiful when the sunlight reflects on the crystals. Each box is a surprise and even if you order the same month as me you might get a different craft. That is the joy and wonder about subscription boxes, isn’t it?!

Recommendations: Omg, I am so pleased with how these cards turned out! They look so fancy and were actually quite simple. I have dabbled in card-making years ago and actually have quite a bit of the supplies, but I just never get around to making them anymore. The Annie’s Cardmaker kit was easy enough for even beginners like my husband and kids to create beautiful cards. Yes, they did even create their own cards for my upcoming birthday this month. We all had so much fun layering while using the die cuts to make the cards pop and look so professional. The kit showed us how to create four unique cards, but with many extra die-cut pieces, card stock, and patterned paper everyone loved making their own creations as well and we still have many more pieces to use for future cards. I think this many have expanded my daughters’ minds with a whole new way to create cards for friends and family. Annie’s CardMarker Kit-of-the-Month Club has definitely helped step up our family’s birthday card game, no more store-bought cards from our family.

We were very lucky to receive two elementary age projects to review in one box. One main project for each of my daughters. Plus a few small bonus projects.

Recommendations: The ARTSHINE in a Box comes with everything! I could not believe how they completely included everything you could possibly need to create to perfect project, in one box, right down to the water dish, paper towel and paint mixing plate! As a mom I love this box, because I don’t have to do any of the planning and gathering of supplies. Everything is so straightforward! The videos were amazing! It was like my kids had their own private instructor teaching them cool art techniques, except they could pause and replay as often as needed. Our box also came with a few other simple bonus projects. These are quick and easy when you only have a few minutes to craft! They don’t require any setting up or much cleaning up and are perfect as a grab and go project too! And those 100% biodegradable packing peanuts are possibly the coolest idea ever! Our whole family enjoyed watching the magic of them disappear completely before our eyes! My kids have seen some of the paintings I have created in the past from PaintNite, this is their own kid version. This box is not just another art box, it allows your kids freedom to create and design while producing something they will be incredibly proud to display and show everyone.

Recommendation: Each new season and holiday in our house calls for us to get in the festive spirit by decorating. So, when this wonderful pumpkin craft arrived at my door, I was so excited! I have heard about felting before, but I never had any idea how to do it or what was involved. Once I began, I very quickly fell in love with it! It is simple, yet you can add some creative touches and in the end you have created the most amazing little pumpkins. I couldn’t believe how great these turned out.
